The Rains Of Ranchipur [HD]

When it rains, it Ranchipours....
Jean Negulesco was actually a pretty good director when it came to this type of film....throw in Richard Burton and Lana Turner and some excessive H2O in Cinemascope and you have a pretty good drama.... the Twilight Time blu-ray is excellent as usual, and this one (Bonjour Tristesse also) has subtitles for those who may need them....great color 1950's film for the buffs amongst us....

Rains Come to Ranchipur
Oh, this is a lot of fun. An old fashioned, big star movie, a melodrama in Old India or thereabouts, somewhere around Hollywood anyway. Nice color, big stars, a dam break, an earthquake, an illicit romance, a few old fashioned special effects, and no CGI. If only it were available on DVD. Your family will enjoy it.

Almost unrecognizable
I had enjoyed the book very much and was looking forward to seeing the movie. I saw the first version called THE RAINS CAME but it was a black and white version shot in the thirties or forties, however, it followed the book pretty much.

In this new (?? 1954, I think) version everything was pretty much butchered up. Yes, the earthquake and dam bust were spectacular in color and CinemaScope but the story was almost totally limited to the love affair between the rich LADY and the Indian doctor, played by Richard Burton in one of his lesser performances.

I realize that a book of that size must be abridged for the movie but to cut most everything that made the book so rich to concentrate only
on the love story between these individuals does a disservice to the writing of Louis Bromfield.
